Following the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Stowmarket Chorale will take you on another journey of pomp and majesty through a performance of ‘Handel’s Monarchs’.
The programme will be three of Handel’s ‘Four Coronation Anthems’ and the anthem for Queen Caroline, ‘The Ways of Zion Do Mourn’.
Handel’s Coronation Anthems were composed for the Coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline in 1727 at Westminster Abbey. The most famous of these, Zadok The Priest, has been heard at the successive coronations of every British monarch, during the Anointing. The music may be familiar from the Coronation of King Charles III and through its use as the theme tune of the Champions League anthem. Its biblical text is drawn from the first chapter of 1 Kings. Zadok was High Priest to King David and anointed Solomon on his accession to the throne. The opening instrumental section builds a strong sense of anticipation, through to the final shouts of rejoicing.
